St. Patricks Day - Pt. 1 Tricky Leprechauns, Yummy Snacks, Crafts & More

I love celebrating holidays with my girls.  It is a chance to introduce them to all the fun things that I had growing up. In this case (for St. Patricks Day) that would be tricky lepechauns, pots of gold at the end of the rainbow, lucky four leaf clovers, shamrocks, etc...

It so much fun to experience this all anew through their eyes! I think it might be even better than being on the receiving end when I was growing up.

Today we had fun with crafts, read some books and baked green cupcakes.

Tonight the sneaky & ever so tricky "leprechaun" struck the Lil Divas bedroom and playroom while they slept peacefully. He obviously made a huge mess in pursuit of gold or other shiny objects and of course left a trail of gold coins behind him in his haste. :)

All they talked about was staying awake to catch one of those sneaky leprechauns, lol!

Here's a peek at our Leprechaun Mess - a tradition I started last year with the Lil Divas!

Here's what we did today:

Books:
The Night Before St. Patrick's Day - Natasha Wing
That's What Leprechauns Do - Eve Bunting

Snacks - Green St. Patty's Day Cupcakes

Use your regular yellow cupcake recipe and just add green food coloring to liking. We did the same with the (buttercream) icing. An easy & festive snack!

Crafts: Tissue Paper Shamrocks (inspiration for this craft came from Gummy Lump Blog)

What You Need:
Shamrock template (from Kidzone)
green tissue paper (we used both light & dark green)
glue
background paper

What to Do:
Prep: cut green tissue paper into squares - I cut lots & we used lots so be sure to have plenty

1. Cut out the shamrock template and glue onto background paper

2. Add glue, one section at a time
3. Crumble tissue paper and stick on - encourage packing them closely together (the less white you see the better it looks)

4. Behold your Tissue Paper Shamrock

Learning Fun:

** I have to give credit to Michelle from Musings of Me for a lot of these wonderful activities which she provided in her FREE printable St. Patrick's Day Unit - what an amazing resource this has been!**

Lucky Charms Graphing

Lucky Charms Graph Template from 2 Teaching Mommies

Be sure to take the time to explain how the graph works and go over the results! Ask how many of each, which had the most, least, etc... Then enjoy the snack!

Shamrock Trace, Color Cut - I used the same template used above in the tissue paper craft for this

First, I had the Oldest Diva trace the outline

Then, she colored it to her liking

Finally, she cut it out

Scissor Skills Practice - The youngest Diva worked on this cutting practice from the unit mentioned above

St. Patrick's Day Size Sort (also from the unit mentioned above)

Sorting Leprechauns by Large, Medium & Small

Sorting Bears from Largest to Smallest

Pre-Writing Practice (see above unit for sheets)

ABC Writing Practice (great sheets I turned into a booklet from the Free unit)
