Kindergarten - Why is it so Stressful?

I posted before about my Kindergarten Woes for my Oldest Diva (click here ---> Public, Charter or Homeschool?) but absolutely nothing is resolved and I am feeling panicked! :(

We did not make it into the lottery for the 1st Charter School - they put us on the dreaded WAITING LIST!

I was really hoping the 2nd Charter School would work out - this is the one I actually like & would want her to attend! Then horror of horrors - we get a letter in the mail that it has been puhed back to May 9th and will (GASP!) now also be a LOTTERY! Insert Manical Shriek HERE!

The stress is killing me - I haven't been sleeping well and my thoughts are seriously consumed with all these horrible scenarios about my poor Lil Diva not being able to go to school and the thing is - she really wants to!

I honestly don't think she'd be happy if we had to homeschool :( She is so looking forward to that Big Girl Rite of Passage that is Kindergarten! They are making a big deal of it at her preschool and of course she hears Mommy talking about it & well, it is a big deal!

So what do I do if she doesn't get in to the Charter School? We CAN NOT afford Private School and I really do not like our zoned for Public School at all. I am going to try to apply for a reassignment but you need a valid reason & well - being a high strung mom who knows what she doesn't want or like for her kids apparently does NOT count! What is wrong with these people? :)

I really wish we had more of a choice in the public school system - these are our kids and we should have more say in how and where they are schooled.

If we could afford it for the long term - I really would be a Homeschooling Mom. There's just no better way to do things - than to do them yourself! But, the reality is I will be returning to work within the next 2 years and so I feel like the Lil Diva should get her start in a brick and mortar school since that is where she will end up the following year anyway.

Who knew getting you child registered for Kindergarten would be so HARD and STRESSFUL?

  1. Found you on the Crazed Fan Weekend Blog Hop. Too funny that you posted this. I just posted today about registering our youngest for kindergarten. Fortunately we like the public school we're zoned for and have had 3 kids go through it already. I wish I could give some stupendous advice, but I can tell you to breathe. She will get to go to school and she'll enjoy it. If it's not the ideal choice or she occasionally doesn't get the ideal teacher (it does happen), it's ok. We're still their parents and are still a vital part of their education. Having less than ideal circumstances is a chance to teach a life lesson that things don't always turn out as we'd like and we need to make the best of them. That all said, I'm crossing my fingers that she makes it in the lottery because it's wicked cool when things do turn out as we want them! Looking forward to keeping up with your blog! :o)

  2. I hope it turns out the way you want...but, yes, I agree with you, it's very disheartening the feeling of powerlessness in our children's educations! Private school would be a dream come true, but it sure isn't affordable for most...which means your child has to suffer. It's very saddening, but I believe that you are the kind of parent who will be supportive and involved, so your kids will thrive!!

Stopping by from the Crazed Fan hop!

  4. My heart goes out to parents who are not satisfied with their school system- I couldn't imagine. Personally, I have always taught in the private sector- but it is way too expensive in NY and charter schools are still so new in our area and are closing daily! (Well, so are public and private for that matter)
I think you have to go with your heart mama- you know what is best.

I will (or plan on) returning to teaching within the next few years as well. Depending on where I end up will determine if they go with me! Call me over-protective- but it is what it is ;-) They may end up going private if that's the path I return to!

  6. One of the great perks about living in a small town is that everybody went to same schools or either went to a church school. There weren't any crazy waiting lists or outrageous tuition fees. Preparing myself for the madness to come in a year with Moo.
