ABC's & 123's Preschool Caterpillar Themed Fun

Our caterpillar week has been so much fun! Not only are we enjoying watching our caterpillars metamorphisis (they have formed into their chrysalises already - see pic below!) but the Lil Divas (and I) have learned so much about them from our books!

Did you know that caterpillars have six pairs of simple eyes (one set on each side of it's head) or that they have three pairs of jointed legs with hooks attached to their thorax and five pairs of stumpy prolegs on the abdomen.

Another interesting fact is that most caterpillars live from about two weeks to a month and for many butterflies and moths this is the longest part of the life cycle. During this stage, the caterpillar can grow in size more than 30,000 times.

The Lil Divas have been amazed to watch them molt and shed their skin as they ate and grew.

Here are a few more of the great books we read during our Caterpillar Theme Week:
I'm a Caterpillar  - a Hello Reader Level 1 Science Book that was perfect for the Lil Divas
The Caterpillar and the Polliwog (Jack Kent)
Arabella Miller's Tiny Caterpillar (Clare Jarrett)
Houdini the Amazing Caterpillar (Janet Pedersen)

Don't forget to check our Other Caterpillar Posts for more of the books we read & activities we did over the course of the week.

ABC's..........

ABC Caterpillar <--- click for this cute ABC caterpillar printable from The Moffat Girls Blog. The Lil Divas put the mixed-up circles in ABC order to complete the caterpillars body. It took some floor space & team work but they had lots of fun doing it!

Do-a-Dot Letter C <---- from Confessions of a Homeschooler - the Lil Divas enjoy these!

Letter C Word Hunt <---- from BeginningReading.com - these are a fun and easy way to review & encourage letter recognition & handwriting

Letter C Whiteboard Writing: After a few days of handwriting sheets where they trace the letter of the week - I like to let the Lil Divas try to form the letters on their own. This really lets me see if the have learned the proper formation and what we need to work on. They did great with the Letter Cc!

and 123's............

Pattern Blocks Caterpillar <--- click for color pattern block printable from prekinders.com. This uses 3 pattern block shapes - octagons, triangles & rhombuses.

Caterpillar Counting Game (#1-10) <--- click for an easy & fun File Folder game from ABCTeach.com that reviews #1-10. This was for my Lil Diva who lately rushes through everything so I like to keep little extra things handy while big sis works. She enjoyed counting the flowers and placing them on the correctly numbered circle on the caterpillars body. I laminated the flower cards for durabilty due to repeat handling.

"How Many Caterpillars" Game <----another great couting printable by Confessions of a Homeschooler. Numbers include 1-20.

The Littlest Diva worked on 1-10

The Oldest Diva focused on 11-20
