If You Give a Mouse a Cookie - A Preschool/Kindergarten Unit

We are having some fun with the If You Give A..... series.

It all started with If You Take a Mouse to School during our Back to School week but once you read one book from this series - you can't just stop! So I decided we would do an author study and have some fun with the books in this series. There is so much fun to be had with these books!

Here's what we did for If You Give a Mouse a Cookie:

We started the day with Chocolate Chip French Toast

& it was a big hit with the Lil Divas.

Chocolate Chip French Toast

Cookie ABC Match File Folder Game (Pre-K)

What You Need:

file folder

lt. brown construction paper

brown construction paper

markers

glue

What We Did:

Prep:

1. Cut small circles out of the lt. brown construction paper and label w/upper case letters of the alphabet

2. Cut chocolate chip shapes from dark brown construction paper and label w/lower case letters of the alphabet.

3. Glue the cookie shapes onto the file folder (I had 2 hanging off the very bottom that I folded up)

How to Play:

1. Child is given the chocolate chip shaped abc's and will match them to the correct ABC cookies

Beginning Sound Cookie Match (Kindergarten)

What You Need:

file folder

lt. brown construction paper

brown construction paper

markers

glue

What We Did:

Prep:

1. Cut small circles out of the lt. brown construction paper and label w/letters of the alphabet

2. cut clip art pictures for the beginning sound of each letter of the alphabet

3. Glue the cookie shapes onto the file folder (I had 2 hanging off the very bottom that I folded up)

How to Play:

1. Child is given the clip art pictures and will match them to the correct alphabet cookies based on the beginning sound for each picture/word

Chocolate Chip Cookie Math (Pre-K):

What You Need:

metal baking sheet

lt. brown construction paper

magnets

markers

What We Did:

Prep:

1. Cut a large circles out of the lt. brown construction paper and 10 small circles

2. number the small circles #1-10

How to Play:

1. Child is given the large cookie cutout on a metal baking sheet.

2. child will turn over the mixed up cookies labeled #1-10 and will add the correct number of chocolate chips (magnets) to correspond to the number on the small cookie shape.

Chocolate Chip Addition (Kindergarten):

What You Need:

metal baking sheet

lt. brown construction paper

white construction paper

dry erase markers

eraser

transparent sheet protector

What We Did:

Prep:

1. Cut a small circles out of the lt. brown construction paper 

2. Glue 4 cookies to each side of a sheet of white construction paper with an addition sign in between and equal sign at the end (see photo above)

3. Add various amount of chocolate chips (dots w/dry erase markers) for simple addition

How to Play:

1. Child is given the cookie cutouts and will count the chocolate chips to add and will write the answer on the line provided.

More Chocolate Chip Addition (Pre-K & K)

Pre-Kindergarten Version:

What You Need:

Cookie Crisp cereal

construction paper

dry erase markers

eraser

transparent sheet protector

foam dice

What We Did:

Prep:

1. Draw small circles on construction paper as plates (see photo above) & place in transparent sheet protector 

How to Play:

1. Child rolls dice and placesc cookies on plates to match number rolled

2. Child will count (add) cookies and write total on line provided

3. Erase and repeat for a new problem.

Kindergarten Version:

This version reviews how to write a correct number sentence for my Kindergartener

What You Need:

Cookie Crisp cereal

construction paper

dry erase markers

eraser

transparent sheet protector

What To Do:

Prep:

1. Draw circles on construction paper as plates (see photo above)

2. Draw lines and symbols for number sentence below (see photo)

3. Place sheet in transparent sheet protector

What To Do:

1. roll dice and add appropriate cookies to each plate

2. fill-in the number sentence with the appropriate numbers

3. add the cookies/numbers and write the total in the appropriate line

Playtime Fun: Playdough Chocolate Chip Cookies

What You Need:

Lt. Brown or Brown Playdough

brown or black pompoms

roller

circle shaped cookie cutter

What To Do:

1. Let child roll out playdough with roller

2. cut out small circles for cookies

3. add pompoms as chocolate chips

4. Enjoy your playdough cookies
