We are having lots of fun and the Lil Divas are definitely enjoying their summer vacation. We have been crossing many items off our Summer Fun List and I can't wait to share some of them with you.
Homemade Puffy Paint
This was so much fun to make and play with. It was a bit of cooking, math, science and art all in one. After a bit of trial and error, we found a consistency that we really liked and that puffed up nicely when microwaved.
Puffy Paint Recipe:
Mix -
1 cup flour
2 tbsp baking powder
2 tbsp salt
then add water -
add a little at a time until you reach a consistency that is like pancake batter.
Finally, add your desired food coloring colors
I poured our colored mixtures into squeeze bottles.
This was SUPER EASY to paint with & the girls LOVED it!
Then, get painting!
We used cardboard as our canvas. It's nice and stiff and safe to microwave. Luckily, we had just gotten in some packages that day and I was able to cut up the box to use for our project.
Once you have your picture complete, pop it into the microwave for 30-45 seconds. I suggest watching it. Most of our paintings took about 30 seconds but a few that had LOTS of puffy paint required a bit more time.
Once we were done, we had some fantastic PUFFY PAINTINGS.
Have you made homemade puffy paint before?
How did it work out for you?
I'd love to see what you did.

ReplyDeleteLove! Trying for sure!
ReplyDeleteThis looks really cute... a little too much for my 2 year old but a good art project for students.
ReplyDeleteI am following you from the Hop and hope you can follow back.

Jillian, You can do this and put the paint in cups - totally doable for a 2yr old. The more paint the better - it puffs up great when it's glopped on. Try it and see. I think it's great for that age I handled the microwaving anyway even with my girls. The picture doesn't have to have an outcome - just enjoy doing it and once they see it puff up, they definitely will want to keep working with it. :)
DeleteSo cool! My 2-year old would love this!
ReplyDeleteYes and the ingredients are natural (except the food coloring) so that's a plus for little ones!
DeleteI'm bookmarking this one for a rainy day! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy it, it was a blast - rainy day or not! :)
DeleteGreat rainy day activity! I love that you only need simple ingredients from the kitchen to make this stuff. Very cool. :)
ReplyDeletestuff you can make from ingredients you already have is always a plus for me too! Easy, no fuss is perfect and this is very easy to do and lots of fun to play with. Enjoy!
Deletecan you store it in those bottles as well or do they get yucky?
ReplyDeleteIt is like saving pancake batter so it gets yucky. I would make what you intend to use and let the kids go wild using it. The more you use, the puffier it is so it's awesome!
DeleteMade this a few days after our Eric Carle art. We love your blog! I linked the post back to this page. Here's my post to share:
