We have read many of her books over the years so my plan was to pick something we hadn't read for the book club but the Lil Divas had other ideas. They have always been drawn to Color Zoo and Color Farm because of the way the animals are made from shapes and how they keep changing/forming as you read the book.
Books We Read by Lois Ehlert
So we opted to go with these 2 favorite books and have some fun with them. Our days are filled with school and school work so I wanted our activities to be light and fun for the Lil Divas.
We decided to make our own Shapes Animal Art
I cut up lots of different shapes using colored construction paper.
Then the Lil Divas got to work creating animal art from the shapes.
The Oldest Diva made a horse (I thought it was a dog, oops!) and the Littlest Diva made a mouse.
We also played a fun game together where we each took turns adding a shape onto a piece of paper to create cooperative shape art. It was to work together to make something that we couldn't plan out. We had to just go with whatever was placed before us.
We ended up playing 3 times, so that we all had a turn going first. We created 3 very different cooperative shape art. It was a fun activity to do together.
One final activity we did was to use Pattern Blocks to freely create art.
It was a lot of fun and a great way to extend 2 of our favorite Lois Ehlert books.
