Add It Up! A Gross Motor Addition Game

The Lil Divas spend a big part of their day sitting at desks in school. The last thing they want to do is spend even more time sitting at home to work some more. That's a big part of the reason why I try to keep things fun and active at home. This week, I am teaming up with two of my favorite bloggers, Train Up a Child and Mess for Less, to bring you some fun Learning Through Movement Activities for Kids.

Kids love active play and they need it too. Developing gross motor skills is an essential part of development. Activities like jumping, running, catching, climbing and riding a bike provide children with skills that enhance school success because they also lead to increased fine motor development and retention. In our home, gross motor activities equal fun and we know that having fun increases learning. Right?

The Oldest Diva has been working hard this year on mastering her math facts in first grade. Much like sight words and phonics skills for reading, they are at the core of many math concepts. While I want her to feel confident in her math skills, practicing anything over and over again can get tedious and boring. So to make it more fun and active, we play games. One of the games the Lil Divas enjoy is

Add it Up!
A Gross Motor Addition Game

To prep, you will need a beach ball and a permanent marker.  Write numbers from 0 to 10 all over the ball, be sure to repeat them so you can practice adding doubles.

To play, simply throw the ball and have your child (or children) catch it. Once they catch the ball, they simply add the numbers under their hands before throwing it to another child.

Continue throwing the ball back and forth and keep practicing those math facts while moving and jumping to catch. It keeps kids active and learning as they play.

The Oldest Diva likes to try to play as fast as she can to challenge herself. We focus on both speed and accuracy. I like that the Littlest Diva can play with her. She is learning math facts while helping her sister and she doesn't even realize it.

This is a great game to play to practice more than just addition facts. You can practice multiplication, sight words, letter and number recognition, vocabulary and even have some family style fun.

For more Math Learning Through Movement be sure to check out what Train Up a Child and Mess for Less shared today. If you would like more fun math ideas check out our Math Fun Pinterest Board and of course our other math activities.

Making math active and fun has become a new mission of mine. The Lil Divas are excellent readers but math is much more difficult for them. Part of it is definitely a lack of interest but I am determined to provide the Lil Divas with a solid foundation on which to build. (By the way, that totally means you'll be seeing lots more math activities around here!)

For the rest of this three (3) part series, we will be bringing you Reading Activities on Wednesday and Science Activities on Friday so be sure to come back to see all of our Learning Through Movement Activities.

Have fun Adding It Up!

Making a Difference in Our Communities (with State Farm Neighborhood Assist)

We all want our communities to be the best they can be. There are so many wonderful programs nationwide that are in dire need of funding. Early in my twenties I worked for a community based not-for-profit program. I saw firsthand how difficult it was to run these types of programs.  I know how tirelessly people work to provide much needed services to the community and how hard it is to keep them going. That's why I am excited to be sharing State Farm's Neighborhood Assist Program with you through a sponsored collaboration with Mom Central Consulting.

State Farm Neighborhood Assist is helping empower communities and the people who live in them by awarding $25,000 grants to 40 deserving community programs. Even more amazing to me - this program is run by State Farm's Youth Advisory Board. The Youth Advisory Board is made up of 30 students ages 17-20, from across the United States and Canada. There is something amazing about our youth taking the time to positively impact their communities.

So why am I taking the time to share this program with you here on the blog? Having worked for many years for a local, community based not-for-profit organization I know how much the programs need these types of grants to sustain themselves and continue offering their valuable services to their local communities.  State Farm Neighborhood Assist will be awarding grants to the 40 programs that YOU vote for! It's people like you (& me) that can and will make a huge difference for 40 well-deserving programs just by voting. I think this program deserves to be shared. The 40 community programs involved need our help. It's so easy to make a few simple clicks and impact well deserving communities.  Voting ends on April 22, 2013 and you can cast up to 10 votes each day. Think about the difference you can make in 40 communities and head on over to VOTE!

State Farm Neighborhood Assist has 200 programs throughout the USA and Canada vying for one of these 40 life changing $25,000 grants. I wish I could make them all winners!

In the spirit of giving back to our communities and supporting programs in need of funding - head on over and cast your 10 votes today. Voting is simple - you can find a program to support by category,  by standing, by clicking on your state or by browsing all the listed programs in alphabetical order.

Check out the State Farm Neighborhood Assist website to learn more about this amazing program. Together, we can make a huge difference if our local communities. Which well deserving program will you be voting for?

Earth Day Books for Kids in K thru 2nd Grade

It's time for another book list for your K thru 2nd graders! With Earth Day on April 22nd, I wanted to share a few related books that we have enjoyed.

Books for Kindergarten thru Early 1st Grade

I Can Save the Earth!: One Little Monster Learns to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle - We have been reading this book for years. The Lil Divas love Max. He is an adorable little green monster who is also quite the environmental nightmare. It's a great book for kids to learn about protecting the earth.

Michael Recycle - I first read this book to a class of Kindergarteners and they were instantly smitten with the easy rhyming text and our superhero - Michael Recycle. I first read it with the Lil Divas last year and it became a quick favorite. It packs an important earth friendly message in a kid friendly way.

Michael Recycle Meets Litterbug Doug - This sequel to Michael Recycle (above) introduces us to Doug - a boy who leaves garbage wherever he goes. The Lil Divas were excited to read another adventure involving Michael Recycle and while it did not surpass their love for the first book, it was an instant hit.

Fancy Nancy: Every Day is Earth Day - A great beginning reader for the Kindergarten thru early 1st grade readers that touts the message that Earth Day should be every day. Nancy goes a bit overboard in her desire to care for the earth and is deemed "bossy". She learns not to be so bossy and overbearing and along the way readers learn some ways to help take care of our planet.

The Berenstain Bears Go Green - This story touches on pollution as the Berenstain Bears find that their town dump is spilling garbage into the river. The town works together to clean up the mess and readers learn all about the dangers of pollution.

Books for 1st thru 2nd Graders

The Lorax - Classic Seuss with a perfect message for Earth Day. What would happen if all the trees were chopped down? What would we be left with? This books lends itself to great discussion about people who behave like the Once-ler and what we can do to be sure to conserve our important resources.

Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew: Earth Day Escapade - The Oldest Diva loves this series so I am always excited to share timely reads with her. In the Earth Day Escapade Nancy's school is putting on a special parade. The Clue Crew works hard to build a "green" float only to find it has been sabotaged a few days before the parade. The book gives readers a mystery to solve while learning about recycling and being "green".

Ready, Freddy!: Save the Earth - Freddy wants to be on Team Green but he must complete all ten points on the Earth Challenge List before he can join. The book shares that children can do things to help the earth and that their role is an important one. This is a great reader for 1st - 2nd graders.

Judy Moody Saves the World - If you haven't read Judy Moody yet, don't waste more time. This is a character that kids will surely enjoy. The Oldest Diva really enjoys these books and they are perfect for her reading level. In this book Judy tackles recycling and gets her entire class to help. She may not save the world but she definitely makes a difference. The book sends a good message about kids making a difference.

Cam Jansen: The Green School Mystery -  We do seem to enjoy our mysteries around here, don't we? Cam Jansen is another favorite series of the Oldest Divas. We are slowly collecting all of the books. In the Green School Mystery Cam Jansen and her classmates earn money for recycling cans and bottles. Unfortunately, the money goes missing but Cam uses her photographic memory to help figure out what happened. Amidst the sleuthing, kids will learn about being "green", making this a great Earth Day themed read for 1st grade and up.
